Boa Hancock - One Piece

Boa made a comeback for Otakon 2012! I really missed wearing her- it had been way too long. I had the pleasure of doing a shoot with *SoulFire-Studio, who is absolutely wonderful and talented (needless to say, book her if you can!). I think this is my absolute favorite picture as Boa. Hope you guys like it!

It's hard for me to write a critique with a low resolution photo, but I won't brag you with it.

Not a bad pose to start with. You and your photographer managed to create an illusion in which you seem taller, using your whole body and cosplay in the photograph, therefore dominating it whole and increasing the impact you create with it. Even the way the camera is focused enhances the illusion of having a greater stature, since there's no clear way to tell if those shoes are high heels of platforms.

I like how you're resting on a black bench between a wooden floor and a small garden (decorated with stones). It helps in bringing out the setting where Hancock comes from, though I would've favoured a more nature dominant setting (with a jade covered bench and river stones in a lush garden, next to a creek). Actually, considering that Hanconk relates to nature, your body also counts as an asset to enhance that feeling since your pose and expression make it more natural and real. To add to the creativity, the contrast created by the black bench, your body and your suit helps in keeping the attention focused on your character.

In terms of photography, I have no complaints. It bothers me though, to see that your shoes don't match perfectly with the suit's color, due to a darker tone, yet I wouldn't dispose of them, since they can actually be a useful color guide, if you get to rework the suit or create a new one. Apart from improving the color, you may want to use different materials on it, particularly in the sleeves. They're so detailed and well cared, despite of any flaws they may have, that they can make a perfect model to start improving on. There's nothing bad with the accesories, since they actually bring the attention to your face (which is easily the brightest focus point in the picture, as it can be the start or the end of a perspective scan, thanks to the camera angle). I have to say that the ring in your pinky finger (sorry if the name sounds silly) helps too in keeping the focus in your face, along with your calm expression and the look in your eyes, which defies the frontier between the picture and the espectator, creating a feeling of charm. Even your hair helps in keeping the attention in your face and the picture for a longer time, adding to the contrast I mentioned earlier (with the way you use your arms and sleeves, making the picture intesting). By the way, the skirt is perfect as it is, so it's design can actually be conserved and transferred to a new material, if the need arises.

In terms of impact, I don't think that the power of a reject dial can compare to this or even the mellorine. In simpler words, it's soothing, yet every aspect on it draws my interest and keeps me inmersed.

Frankly, I'm not sure if the last paragraph was objective enough, because of my love for One Piece, yet even before I ever knew what it was, pictures like this would always fire up my interest. To everyone who read this, I hope my critique was objective and enriching from the start to the end, as I exposed my critics for every aspect worth mentioning in this work of art.

Have a nice day, and keep on improving as you keep on loving what you do.
